Help!!

Ok-- As I told you in my last post-- I had a bout with ITBS. I have taken the past week off. It feels better but I am soo afraid to push it.

I HAVE to pick up marathon training soon-- I have finished all of my long runs but at this point worried about losing my fitness level-- any idea how long it takes to lose, pace/speed/etc?

  1. Patrick,

When I was training for the Buffalo Half-Marathon last May, I had to take almost a week off from training because of a serious bout of bronchitis and a sinus infection. I totally panicked because my doctor told me I had to stop running for at least five days. When I talked to my coach he assured me that a few days off would not destroy my entire training program. If you keep up with your long runs at the very least, you should be able to work your way back into your normal training. Just don't rush in too quickly! That only reaggravates injuries.

BTW, I suffered from ITBS until I started using an ITBS strap and doing stretches that worked specifically on that area on the outside of the knee. Because of that, I haven't had real issues with my IT band for over a year now. Check out the strap:

Just take it easy getting back into your training. I'm sure you'll do just fine!

  2. 5 days.

I have no clue, but I taught PE for awhile, and kids who were fit, and out of school a week...it took another week to get them ready.

    Do something else instead?

  3. Hmmmm... I thought I heard/read somewhere that it takes a couple weeks to have time off hurt your training. But I'm no expert.

You've been consistent with your training and faithful about building your mileage. I bet you will do great!

  4. check out my recovery from ITBS. Prevention stretching has been key for me.
I also had a pain in my literal butt! THis was piriformis syndrome. Very painful and slow recovery, but beatable! Dont go too fast too son, but if it does not change your stride or gait while running, keep going and take acre of yourself!
